Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that is officially known as Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.  The purpose of orthodontics is to treat any type of malocclusion, which is simply another way of saying "bad bite."

Orthodontists are specially-trained dentists who use braces and other corrective procedures, including material often called "appliances," to achieve tooth and jaw alignment. This correction of the teeth and their supportive structures make for a healthy and attractive smile.

The History of Orthodontics

Irregular teeth have been a problem that can be dated back to at least 1000 BC. But the first texts that describe orthodontics didn't appear until 1850 AD.

In 1900, the American Association of Orthodontists was formed. Orthodontists must complete college requirements before starting a 3 to 5 year graduate program at a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association. After dental school, at least 2 or 3 academic years of advanced specialty education in an ADA-accredited orthodontic program are required to be an orthodontist.

The orthodontics program includes advanced education in biomedical, behavioral and basic sciences. Orthodontists also learn the complex skills required to manage tooth movement (orthodontics) and guide facial development (dentofacial orthopedics).
